Stainless Steel Crowns (SSC) — Primary Tooth Restoration · Ataşehir

Stainless Steel Crowns (SSC) are prefabricated crown applications used to protect primary teeth that cannot be adequately restored with fillings due to advanced decay, after pulp therapy, or because of developmental disorders such as MIH (Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization). The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends SSC as the first-choice restorative method in these situations.

Primary teeth are critical for the child's chewing function, speech development, esthetic confidence, and the proper eruption of permanent teeth (space-maintainer function). Early loss of primary teeth with advanced decay leads to the need for a space maintainer (/en/blog/space-maintainer-after-early-baby-tooth-loss); whenever possible, preserving the primary tooth with SSC is the priority approach.

The procedure is usually completed in a single session. After local anesthesia (digital anesthesia is preferred — /en/services/digital-anesthesia), the tooth is properly contoured, the correct-sized SSC is selected, adapted to the tooth, and cemented with glass ionomer cement. The crown remains in place until the primary tooth naturally exfoliates (~10-12 years) and is shed together with the tooth, leaving room for the permanent tooth.

Stainless steel crowns show clinical success rates above 95% at 5+ years (Cochrane systematic review). Compared to fillings, they dramatically reduce the need for repeated treatment; they are an ideal option, especially for multi-surface decay, large restorations, or post-pulpotomy cases. For anterior esthetic needs, composite/zirconia esthetic crowns can be considered.

Frequently Asked Questions About Stainless Steel Crowns (SSC) — Primary Tooth Restoration · Ataşehir

How long does a stainless steel crown last?

An SSC remains in place until the primary tooth naturally exfoliates — generally 3-6 years, depending on the tooth's position. When the tooth sheds, the permanent tooth erupts normally; the crown does not stay on the permanent tooth.

Is the crown placement procedure painful?

The procedure is performed under digital anesthesia (WAND/STA); the child does not feel pain during the process. Mild sensitivity for 24-48 hours afterward is possible — soft food is recommended. See: /en/services/digital-anesthesia.

Why is a crown preferred over a filling?

In advanced decay (generally 2+ surfaces, more than half the tooth), after pulp therapy (pulpotomy/pulpectomy), or in developmental disorders such as MIH, fillings cannot provide sufficient durability and have a high failure risk. SSC completely surrounds the tooth, providing a much longer-lasting restoration.

Will my child have a metallic appearance in their mouth?

Yes, SSC is made of stainless steel and appears silver in color. It is applied to posterior molars (typically primary first and second molars), so it does not stand out socially. For anterior esthetic needs, composite or zirconia crowns can be evaluated.

Is special care needed after the crown?

Normal toothbrushing is sufficient; daily brushing and 6-month check-ups are important to prevent plaque accumulation at the SSC margins. Hard/sticky foods (Turkish delight, halva, nuts) can stress the crown adhesion — limited consumption is recommended.

How much does it cost?

SSC fees depend on the treatment scope (whether pulpotomy is needed, how many teeth, anesthesia type). Per Turkish Dental Association (TDB) regulations, pricing is not shared on the website; after examination, a written fee is provided with your treatment plan.
